The Pocatello Art Council (PAC) is seeking proposals from Northwest sculpture artists (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon and Utah) for a public art installation to be located in the entranceway of the new Grizzly Bear Exhibit at the Pocatello Zoo in Southeast Idaho. Deadline is October 15, 2010 (Note: This is an extension of an earlier May 15 deadline)

The proposed work is to be located at the entrance to a new Grizzly Bear Exhibit which will be landscaped with native flora to emulate a Northwest wooded area. The proposed 3D work should integrate within the environment to create interest, promoting contemplation and encouraging rest for visitors. The proposed artwork should deal with the subject matter of “Grizzly”. Reference to the Grizzlies’ direct connection to a water habitat for survival is desirable.

It is highly recommended that the artist(s) visit the Pocatello Zoo to get a sense of the environment with which to create the artwork. The site includes access to electricity and plumbing which may be utilized for the proposed work. See below for examples of the wooded area at the zoo and please feel free to contact our PAC representative at the email provided to make arrangements to tour the site.

A maximum of $15,000 dollars will be awarded to the selected artist/collaborative team for the completion and installation of this work. Funding is being provided by the Pocatello Arts Council and the generous support of the Ifft Foundation Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation. A panel of no less than five community members from the Pocatello and surrounding area will jury and rank the proposals. After final review by the PAC, selected artist(s) will be notified by December 31, 2010.

Proposal Instructions

In the following order, please include in your materials (5 copies):

1. Contact information

Name, address, phone number(s), email address

2. Project Description

Please provide us with a 1-3 page detailed description of the work you intend to install at the Pocatello Zoo.
Include in this description:

• Brief artist’s statement;
• Brief overview of the work;
• How the work relates with the Grizzly exhibit;
• How the work connects to the environment of the Grizzly’s natural habitat;
• Medium (e.g. metal, stone, concrete, etc.);
• Dimensions;
• How the piece will be installed;
• Durability, Long-term maintenance requirements;
• Interactivity, if any (e.g. can be sat on, touched by children);
• Any other relevant information.
3. Budget

Please provide a detailed budget for the proposed work, maximum $15,000. In-kind donations may be necessary to balance your budget:

• Cost of materials;
• Cost to install work (materials, labor, etc.);
• All costs including travel, per diem and artist’s stipend;
• [Although specific long-term maintenance costs need not be included within the budget, they must be clearly outlined and addressed in the project description].
4. Diagram

Please provide a detailed image, sketch, drawing, and/or diagram of proposed work.

5. Curriculum Vitae

Submit a CV up to 5 pages that outlines your professional accomplishments. Include two references, names, titles, contact information and affiliation.

Supplemental Materials (highly recommended but not required for consideration):
Submit all materials on a CD or DVD as well as one (1) hard color copy in the event the disc does not read:

• Images (.jpg, 10 max.) of past public art/site-specific installations; as well as other relevant work.
  
  Image documentation list: Include a list with your name, title of the work, medium, date work was completed, dimensions, and photo credit. Number each to correspond with images. Comments are optional.];
• Articles/reviews of work (3 max.);
• Promotional materials (3 max.).

Please be aware:

• Do not use staples, folders, plastic sheets, or ring binders to hold materials.
• The Pocatello Arts Council does not accept applications or support materials submitted by fax or email.
• Mail or hand-deliver your completed application packet, with all supplemental materials, by 5:00 p.m. October 15, 2010 to:

• If you would like your materials returned, include a large, self-addressed mailer with sufficient postage in your application packet. Please do not send original or master copies of your work.
